Get Hot with Bikram Yoga

Wed, 26 Sep 2012

There is a new hot global fitness phenomenon.

Its followers include Madonna, Demi Moore, George Clooney, Pippa Middleton and David Beckham. They bend themselves into various positions in a room that is heated to more than 100f.

This new sensation is called Bikram , a hot form of yoga comprising 26 positions.

Even Buckingham Palace guards use it to train for standing in those sweltering bearskins for umpteen hours.

Bikram yoga classes are growing in popularity in the UK, especially in London.

The practice has got its name from its founder, Bikram Choudhury, an eccentric 66-year-old yoga guru who resides in Los Angeles.

A decade ago the flamboyant Bikram patented 26 of his signature yoga postures which he claims helped him recover from crippling injuries incurred due to a weight-lifting accident. Therefore, each Bikram yoga studio has to pay a licence fee to open, and monthly fees to operate.

Many Hindus have been outraged, stating that yoga, which dates back 5,000 years, does not belong to anyone.

Nonetheless, Bikram is now estimated to make £3 million annually from his yoga training courses, the 5,000 plus officially-certified studios, as well as branded products.
